A small first step

Your first carpool

Curious about carpooling, but not sure about riding with someone new? That's normal. The good news: the first step is just a conversation.

It's smaller than you think

  1. Say hello
  2. Chat
  3. Coffee or one ride
  4. Carpool if you like it
  5. Leave any time

Sending a request simply asks the other person whether they'd like to talk. If they say yes, a private chat opens. That's it. Nobody has signed up for anything.

If you both like the idea, either of you can start a carpool from the chat. It begins with the days and times already in your profiles; the rest (where you meet, who drives, how you share costs) is up to you. Plans change? Change them, any time.

Not ready for every week? Try a single ride on the day board first. And if it isn't working, you can leave a carpool in one tap.

There's no contract to sign, and no money goes through iHopOn.

What's in it for you

  • Shared costs

  • Your time back

  • Good company

  • One less car

Sharing the ride usually means sharing fuel and parking. The commute cost page shows what a drive to work really costs, with every assumption written down so you can use your own numbers.

As a passenger, you get your commute back: read, rest, or just watch the road go by. As a driver, you get company, and the drive can feel shorter with someone to talk to. Either way, it's one less car on the road.

Why this person

You were matched because you start near each other, work near each other and go in on the same days. We measure the extra driving on real roads, not as the crow flies.

Open their match page to see the route, both of your weeks and the detour, and decide whether the trip could work. A match tells you the commute fits; getting to know the person is up to you.

"Verified" means they confirmed a work email address. It isn't an identity or background check.

Making first contact

Once they say yes, a short hello is plenty. For example:

  • Hi! Looks like we have almost the same commute. Would you like to chat about sharing a ride sometime?
  • Hi! How about a coffee near work first, before we decide anything?
  • Want to try one ride together and see how it goes?

Meeting for a coffee, or at a park-and-ride, is a nice way to start. Try one day before deciding on anything regular. You might find you love it.

And if it's not for you, that's fine too. If you haven't sent or accepted a request, "Not for me" on a match's page removes the match quietly; the other person isn't told.

If it doesn't work out

You can leave a carpool at any time, without giving a reason. If it was just the two of you, the other person is simply told the carpool ended.

If something feels wrong, you can block or report someone from their page. The trust and safety page explains how.

All you have to decide today is whether you'd like to say hello. The rest can come later.
