Terms of Service
Last updated: September 3, 2026
By creating an account or using iHopOn, you're agreeing to these terms. Please read them — especially the next section, which explains exactly what iHopOn does and doesn't do.
What iHopOn is
iHopOn is a matching and coordination platform. It helps people who commute to the same general area find each other, see whether their schedules line up, and message each other to arrange carpooling together.
There are two ways people arrange rides here: a standing arrangement with the same people each week, and a day board for one-off trips on a single date. In both cases iHopOn records what you say you've agreed and tells the right people about it. That's the whole service.
What iHopOn is not
This is the most important section on this page, so we're stating it plainly:
- iHopOn does not provide transportation. We are not a transportation company, a taxi or ride-hailing service, or a common carrier of any kind.
- We do not employ, background-check, or supervise drivers. We do not inspect vehicles, and we do not verify anyone's driver's licence, insurance, or driving record.
- We do not verify anyone's identity. Confirming that someone controls an email address at an eligible organization is not a check of who they are, and you should not treat it as one.
- Every ride arranged through iHopOn is a private arrangement directly between the users involved. iHopOn is not a party to that arrangement.
- We are not an insurer, agent, or broker for any ride, and we are not responsible for what happens during a ride — including accidents, injury, property damage, delays, or the conduct of any user, on or off the platform.
- iHopOn does not process payments. If you choose to split gas or other costs with someone, that exchange happens directly between you, entirely outside iHopOn. Any cost figures shown in the app are informational only.
- By using iHopOn, you understand that carpooling carries real risks, and that you are choosing to carpool entirely at your own discretion and risk.
Who can use iHopOn
You must be at least 18 years old. You need to confirm the email address you sign up with before you can use the app, and you agree to verify an eligible organizational work email address.
Verifying a work email is required to be matched with anyone or to use the day board — an account that has not verified one can sign in and set up a profile, but will not be matched and will not see or appear on the day board. Members who have verified carry a verified marker that others can see. We may also limit or close an account. You're responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for everything that happens under your account.
Your responsibilities
Give us accurate information, and keep it accurate — your schedule, your postal code, and whether you drive are what other people rely on when deciding to travel with you. Don't impersonate anyone or hold an account on someone else's behalf.
Treat other users respectfully — harassment, discrimination, and unsafe behaviour aren't tolerated. Don't use iHopOn for anything illegal, and don't try to work around our verification, matching, or safety systems.
If you drive, you're responsible for being properly licensed and insured to carry passengers, and for keeping your vehicle roadworthy. That's between you and your insurer — it's not something iHopOn checks or guarantees.
Arrangements you make with other members
When you agree a carpool — the days, the meeting point, who drives, how costs are split — iHopOn records it and shows it to the people in that arrangement. Changing agreed terms requires everyone in it to confirm. None of that makes the arrangement a contract with us, and we don't enforce it: we can't make anyone turn up.
Cancelling has real consequences for real people. If you're driving and you cancel, the ride ends for everyone who was counting on it, and they're told so they can find another way. If you're a passenger and you cancel, you come off that ride and the driver is told.
Please cancel as early as you can. Repeated no-shows and late cancellations are visible to other members — see the next section.
Reports, blocks, and account standing
You can report or block another user directly from the app. We review reports — more serious categories are prioritized — and may warn, suspend, or remove an account as a result.
How rides actually went is visible to other members. Repeated no-shows and late cancellations affect your reliability score, and members you've ridden with can leave you a star rating; both are shown to people deciding whether to travel with you.
We may suspend or terminate any account, with or without notice, for behaviour that violates these terms or puts other users at risk. A suspension may be for a set period or indefinite. If your account is closed for a safety reason, the record of the work email attached to it is kept, which means that address cannot be used to open a new account.
Ratings and feedback
You can rate a member you've actually ridden with, once, and change that rating later. Rate honestly and on the basis of the rides themselves.
Written comments are never shown to the person they're about — they're visible only to you and to administrators reviewing a safety concern. That isn't an invitation to write something you wouldn't stand behind: comments can be read during moderation and acted on.
We may remove a rating or comment that is abusive, retaliatory, or clearly not about a real ride.
Your content
Messages, day board posts, ratings, and anything else you submit through iHopOn remain yours. By submitting them, you give us the limited licence we need to operate the service — for example, delivering your messages to the people you send them to, and showing your posts to the members they're meant for. Don't post anything illegal, harassing, or that you don't have the right to share.
Cost, and sponsors
iHopOn is free to use. There are no fees, no subscriptions, and no payments of any kind through the platform.
We may show sponsor messages in the app to help cover running costs. Any such message is chosen by commute corridor or shown to everyone — never selected using anything about you personally, and never using your profile, matches, or messages. We don't sell your personal information.
No guarantees
We try to make good matches, but we don't guarantee you'll find a match, that any match will work out, that anyone will turn up for a ride they agreed to, or that the service will always be available or error-free. iHopOn is provided "as is" and "as available."
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, iHopOn and the people who run it are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service or any ride arranged through it.
Because iHopOn is a free service, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you've paid us in the past 12 months — which, since the service is free, is $0.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
You agree to cover us for claims caused by your own actions
If your use of iHopOn, or a ride you arrange through it, leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs defending against it — except where that claim is caused by our own negligence.
Ending your access
You can stop using iHopOn and delete your account at any time from Profile → Privacy. We can suspend or end your access if you violate these terms.
Deleting your account does not erase everything: some records are kept in a de-identified form so that other members' ride history and any open safety matters stay intact. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is removed and what is retained.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. If you use iHopOn from Quebec, this does not remove any protection you have under the laws that apply to you there.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We'll update the date at the top of this page when we do. Continuing to use iHopOn after a change means you accept the updated terms.
